Teriyaki is a type of cooking that involves grilling or broiling meat, fish or vegetables and then glazing them with a sweet and savory sauce. This cooking method originated in Japan and has become popular worldwide because of its delicious taste and simplicity. The word “teriyaki” comes from the Japanese words “teri,” meaning luster or shine, and “yaki,” meaning grilled or broiled. In Japan, teriyaki is often served on skewers, making it a popular street food.
I remember the first time I tasted salmon teriyaki as a kid in Japan. I was blown away by the perfect balance of sweet and salty flavors in the dish. Now, salmon teriyaki has become a regular in my weeknight dinner rotation. It’s the perfect meal when I’m short on time but still want something healthy and flavorful.
Honey Glazed Teriyaki Salmon
Ingredients
- 4-5 salmon filets (skinless, boneless – up to you)
- 2 tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 1 cup honey
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 1/2 cup pineapple juice
- 1/4 cup brown sugar substitute white sugar
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp white distilled vinegar
Dry Rub
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 F.
- Get a casserole dish out. Optional: line with foil paper for easier cleanup.
- Arrange the salmon fillets in a casserole dish and generously brush both sides with sesame oil, using your hands to gently massage the oil into the fish to ensure both sides are fully coated.
- Combine paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper and salt in a tray for dry rub. Generously sprinkle the dry rub onto both sides of the salmon and pat it down to ensure it sticks. Add minced garlic and set aside.
- In a saucepan over medium-low heat, add honey, soy sauce, pineapple juice, brown sugar, lemon juice, vinegar, sesame oil, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, salt, and paprika. Stir to combine. Bring to very light simmer for 10 minutes. Do not boil.
- Remove sauce from heat and let cool. Pour over salmon.
- Bake salmon for 12 minutes. Take out salmon. Drizzle honey all over it.
- Broil salmon for remaining 2 minutes so the honey and teriyaki sauce caramelizes!
